Teaching

Workshop Description

Liberation within Vulnerability is a 2 ½ hour workshop held at the annual Somatic Movement Arts Festival in Los Angeles, California. This class is open to adults 18+. This class will explore how we can become liberated from the material body while valuing our physical experience through somatic awareness and embodiment. We will learn the difference between feeling uncomfortable and feeling unsafe to help us embrace the concept of liberation that can kinesthetically change one’s awareness of the self, society, and preconceptions of the body. Liberation is the act of freeing oneself from the limits set on us, and in this class, we will use vulnerability to break free of these limits. We will source movement from within ourselves through improvisation and use somatic awareness to let our bodies inform our individual and group experiences with comfort, ease, and intelligence.

Teaching Statement

In my teaching. there are seven essential elements important for learning:

  1. The teacher is the guide – there to help the students in any way possible.

  2. The teacher encourages bravery and vulnerability – students come as they are.

  3. The teacher supports mistakes – they are essential for learning.

  4. The teacher recognizes the students’ unique strengths – individuality and self-expression are integrated into the classroom.

  5. Students make individual choices – this curiosity directs their learning.

  6. Students understand how their body functions – somatic practices are essential in the classroom.

  7. Students are set-up for success – everything is explained kinesthetically, visually, and auditorily because each student has a different way of learning.
